GIJ Admission Requirements 2024/2025
B.A. Communication Studies
For B.A. Communication Studies at the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), different entry requirements apply based on the educational background of the applicants
SSSCE Holders
- Passes (A – D) in six subjects
- Three core subjects, including English and Mathematics
- Three elective subjects
- The overall aggregate of 24 or better
WASSCE Holders
- Passes (A1-C6) in six subjects
- Three core subjects, including English and Mathematics
- Three elective subjects.
- The overall aggregate of 36 or better
GCE Advance Level Holders
- GCE ‘A’ Level Grade E or better in three subjects
- At least one subject should be Grade D or better
- Credit passes (Grade 6 or better) in five GCE ‘O’ Level subjects, including English, Mathematics, and Science subjects for non-science students
Diploma Holders
- GIJ Diploma holders with a CGPA of 1.79 and below can apply for admission to level 200
Mature Students
- Must be at least 25 years old
- Provide proof of age with a birth certificate or legitimate documentary proof
- Applicants will undergo a special entrance examination in English Language, Mathematics, and Aptitude Test/General Paper

Diploma in Communication Studies
For the Diploma in Communication Studies at the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), different entry requirements apply based on the educational background of the applicants
SSSCE Holders
- Six passes (A-D) in all subjects, including English and Mathematics
- For areas of specialization, three passes must be in relevant subjects
WASSCE Holders
- Six passes (A1-D7) in all subjects, including English and Mathematics
- Must have a minimum of C6 in any three passes relevant to the area of specialization
Mature Students
- Must be at least 25 years old
- Provide proof of age with a birth certificate or legitimate documentary proof
- Applicants will undergo a special entrance examination in English Language, Mathematics, and Aptitude Test/General Paper
Level 300 Top-Up Weekend Session (Saturday & Sunday)
For admission into the Level 300 Top-Up Weekend Session (Saturday & Sunday) at the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), the minimum entry requirements are as follows
GIJ Diploma Holders
A GIJ Diploma with a final CGPA of 2.5 and above
An equivalent Diploma from an accredited communications training institution with a CGPA of 3.0 and above or an average of Grade B
Applicants with a GIJ Diploma and a final CGPA between 1.80-2.49 or an equivalent Diploma may be considered for a fee-paying option
Diploma Holders from Specific Disciplines
Diploma holders with a Final Grade Point Average of 3.00 in disciplines such as Archival Studies, Public Administration, Social Administration, Education, and Management Studies are eligible to apply
Higher National Diploma (HND) Holders
HND holders with a minimum of 2nd Class (Lower Division) in Marketing, Information Technology, Secretaryship and Management Studies, as well as Social Science and Humanities programs not mentioned here, are eligible to apply
Final Year Diploma Students
Final year diploma students are eligible to apply as awaiting results applicants
Certificates and transcripts should be provided to complete the application process
International students
International students with equivalent qualifications are welcome to apply for any of the programs at the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ). However, certain conditions must be met
Qualification Verification
- International students must have their certificates and/or qualifications verified by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) before being admitted.
English Language Proficiency
- Applicants from non-English speaking countries must meet a minimum level of English Language proficiency. This ensures that they can effectively participate in the academic programs and communicate in English
