Application Requirements 2024

Here are the requirements you need to access the South African Army application forms

  • You must be a South African citizen without dual citizenship
  • For enlisted applicants, ages 18 to 22; for officer applicants, ages 18 to 26
  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent with minimum Level 4 in English and Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy
  • No criminal record or pending cases
  • Good health and eyesight
  • Willingness to undergo military training and serve in the SANDF for at least five years

South African Army Application Process 2024/2025

Below is your online application process 

  1. Obtain the Form: Download it from the SANDF website or collect it at a local recruitment office
  2. Complete the Form: Fill in your details, education, work, and references, and attach certified ID and matric copies. Use formal language
  3. Submit: Deliver the form to the nearest SANDF office or mail it as indicated. Keep copies for your records
  4. Selection Process: If shortlisted, expect tests, interviews, and checks; duration varies based on vacancies
  5. Contract Offer: Upon success, receive an officer or soldier contract. Training content and duration depend on your role
  6. Deployment: After training, fulfill your duties in a South African Army unit

SANDF Recruitment Qualifications Criteria

Here are the qualification criteria for applying to the South African Forces

General Musterings

  • Admission Point Score (APS) of 17 or higher, excluding Life Orientation (LO), with specific subjects and levels as specified for each occupation.

Army

  • Admission Point Score (APS) of 17 or higher, excluding Life Orientation (LO).
  • Level 4 in Mathematics and Physical Science will be advantageous.

Air Force

  • Admission Point Score (APS) of 17 or higher, excluding Life Orientation (LO).
  • Mathematics, Physical Science, and English with a minimum level of 4.

Air Force (Technical Trade)

  • Admission Point Score (APS) of 20 or higher, excluding Life Orientation (LO).
  • Mathematics, Physical Science, and English with at least level 4.

Navy (Combat, Technical Engineering)

  • Admission Point Score (APS) of 24 or higher, excluding Life Orientation (LO).
  • Mathematics and Physical Science with at least level 4 for both subjects (No Mathematical Literacy).

Navy (Support)

  • Admission Point Score (APS) of 24 or higher, excluding Life Orientation (LO), with specific subjects and levels as stipulated for each occupation.

SA Navy (Divers and Submariners)

Divers:

  • Admission Point Score (APS) of 20 or higher, excluding Life Orientation (LO).
  • Mathematics with at least level 3 (No Mathematical Literacy).

Submariners:

  • Admission Point Score (APS) of 24 or higher, excluding Life Orientation (LO).
  • Mathematics and Physical Science with at least level 4 for both subjects (No Mathematical Literacy).

Navy (Engineering)

  • Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering.

Air Force (Engineer)

  • Admission Point Score (APS) of 35 or higher, excluding Life Orientation (LO).
  • Mathematics, Physical Science, and English with at least level 4.

 Air Force (Pilots/Navigators):

  • Mathematics, Physical Science, and English with a minimum level of 4.
  • Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) and Grade 12 with Mathematics, Physical Science, and English with a minimum level of 4.

SA Air Force (Engineers)

  • Industrial Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Aeronautical Engineering.

SA Military Health Service

  • Admission Point Score (APS) of 24, excluding Life Orientation (LO), for all available occupations, with specific subjects and levels as stipulated for each medical/nursing occupation.
  • Occupations include Public Relations, Journalism, Organisational Study, and Medical/Nursing roles.
